Emotions ran high on Friday as several members of the film fraternity gathered at the residence of the Kapoor family to mourn the passing of Nirmal Kapoor, the matriarch of the Kapoor clan and mother to producer Boney Kapoor and actors Anil and Sanjay Kapoor. Nirmal Kapoor passed away on May 2 at the age of 89 at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital.
A video circulating on social media captured a heart-wrenching moment as actor Ananya Panday broke down in tears while paying her final respects. Clad in a white ethnic suit, Ananya, who shares a close bond with Shanaya Kapoor and Janhvi Kapoor — granddaughters of the late Nirmal Kapoor — was visibly inconsolable. She avoided interacting with the paparazzi and rushed inside the house, overcome with emotion.
Ananya wasn’t the only one offering support to the grieving family. Vedang Raina, rumoured to be dating Khushi Kapoor, was seen arriving to lend comfort during this difficult time. Janhvi Kapoor, deeply affected by her grandmother’s passing, was comforted outside the house by her boyfriend, Shikhar Pahariya.
A host of Bollywood celebrities including Rani Mukerji, Anupam Kher, Jackie Shroff, Suhana Khan, Javed Akhtar, and Veer Pahariya also visited the Kapoor residence to pay their condolences.
Nirmal Kapoor, widow of veteran film producer Surinder Kapoor, was the matriarch of one of Bollywood’s most prominent families. She is survived by her four children — Boney, Anil, Sanjay, and Reena Kapoor Marwah — as well as eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In a statement shared by the Kapoor family, they said, “Passed away peacefully on the 2nd of May, 2025, surrounded by her beloved family. She lived a full and joyful life, leaving behind four devoted children, loving daughters-in-law, a caring son-in-law, eleven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and a lifetime of treasured memories.”
Nirmal Kapoor’s funeral is scheduled to take place on Saturday at Vile Parle Crematorium, Pawan Hans, in Mumbai.
