Former Bollywood actress Mamta Kulkarni, best known for her roles in 1990s hits like Karan Arjun, has returned to India after 25 years. The actress, who had been living abroad since 2000, shared her joy at coming back home through a heartfelt Instagram video. However, her return also brings back memories of a controversial chapter in her life—her alleged involvement in a ₹2,000-crore drug trafficking case.
The ₹2,000-Crore Drug Case
The case, which emerged in 2016, involved Avon Lifesciences Ltd, a Solapur-based pharmaceutical company accused of illegally siphoning off ephedrine, a controlled substance. Authorities claimed the ephedrine was to be transported to Kenya and processed into methamphetamine for distribution in the US market.
Mamta Kulkarni and her partner, alleged drug lord Vicky Goswami, were named as key accused. The Thane police alleged that Ms. Kulkarni attended a meeting at Kenya’s Bliss Hotel in January 2016, where details of the drug operation were discussed. It was also claimed that she was involved with Avon Lifesciences, possibly in the capacity of a director.
However, the case against Ms. Kulkarni rested heavily on a statement by co-accused Jay Mukhi, who later retracted his testimony, citing coercion.
High Court Clears Mamta Kulkarni
In a landmark judgment, the Bombay High Court quashed the FIR against Ms. Kulkarni, citing insufficient evidence. The bench, comprising Justice Bharati Dangre and Justice Manjusha Deshpande, ruled that apart from the allegations in the FIR, there was no concrete proof linking her to the crime.
Ms. Kulkarni maintained her innocence throughout the investigation, insisting she was wrongfully implicated. With the court ruling in her favor, she has been cleared of all charges, putting an end to years of legal and public scrutiny.
Impact on Mamta Kulkarni’s Life and Career
The controversy dealt a significant blow to Ms. Kulkarni’s public image and ended her Bollywood career. Despite the challenges, she has consistently denied any involvement in the drug trafficking operation. The recent judgment has provided her the relief she long sought, paving the way for a new chapter in her life.
As she begins her journey back in India, Ms. Kulkarni’s return is a testament to resilience amid personal and legal turmoil.
