In a candid conversation, Bollywood actor Aamir Khan opened up about a humorous exchange with his ex-wife, filmmaker Kiran Rao. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Aamir was asked about a list of “11 tips on how to be a better husband” that Kiran had shared with him following their 2021 separation, after 16 years of marriage. Known for his dedication, Aamir revealed he’s been diligently working on improving himself based on her feedback.
“Kiran told me I don’t allow other people to talk,” Aamir said, adding that while he didn’t entirely agree, he noted her remarks in his phone, admitting they could be “useful.” According to Aamir, the list has become part of his personal journey to become a better partner.
When the interviewer suggested that all husbands should consider such exercises, Aamir quipped that wives should, too. He joked, “Kiran never asked me, ‘How can I be a better wife?’” Aamir continued, hinting he might have his own list for her if she ever asked.
Kiran’s quick response charmed audiences, as she smiled and said, “Okay. Luckily, now I’m the ex-wife, so I don’t need to know.”
A Long-Standing Bond and Continued Co-Parenting
Aamir and Kiran first met on the set of Lagaan, where Aamir starred, and Kiran worked as an assistant director. They married in 2005 and share a son, Azad Rao Khan, whom they continue to co-parent following their amicable separation.
Kiran, who has directed and produced films of her own, shared earlier this year how she’s often recognized in association with Aamir. She commented that many people, even at the airport, still refer to her as “Aamir Khan’s wife,” requiring her to clarify that she is now the “ex-wife.”

Kiran’s latest film, Laapataa Ladies, has been selected as India’s official Oscar entry this year. Released on March 1, 2024, the film stars Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Ravi Kishan, and Chhaya Kadam. Aamir, meanwhile, was last seen in Laal Singh Chaddha alongside Kareena Kapoor, Mona Singh, and Naga Chaitanya.
Despite their separation, Aamir and Kiran remain supportive of each other’s careers and dedicated to their shared parenting duties. Their recent lighthearted interaction reflects the mutual respect and camaraderie they’ve maintained, making their bond a unique one in Bollywood.
