Aamir Khan Productions has updated its display picture across all official social media platforms to the Indian national flag, a move that has sparked intense online discussion amid rising boycott calls targeting Aamir Khan’s upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par. The change, spotted by users on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter), is being seen by many as an act of “damage control” rather than a patriotic gesture.
The timing of the change has raised eyebrows, as it comes amid mounting criticism directed at Aamir Khan for his perceived silence on Operation Sindoor — a major Indian Armed Forces operation that targeted terror camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Adding to the controversy, an old video of the actor from a visit to Turkey — which some users view as politically sensitive — has resurfaced, further fueling online outrage.
Online Backlash and “Damage Control” Allegations
Shortly after the tricolour display picture went live, a screenshot was circulated on Reddit, sparking a wave of commentary. “Lol he’s being boycotted online so clearly did it as damage control,” one user commented. Another added, “Bekar me damage control kar rahe hai,” implying that the gesture might not work in quelling the backlash.
Critics argue that the timing of Aamir Khan’s show of patriotism aligns too closely with the promotional campaign for Sitaare Zameen Par, which is slated for a theatrical release on June 20, 2025. The film, reportedly a spiritual successor to Khan’s critically acclaimed Taare Zameen Par, has already released its trailer.
Belated Acknowledgment of Operation Sindoor
Adding to the scrutiny, Aamir Khan Productions posted a message on May 12, acknowledging Operation Sindoor. The message read:
“Salute to the heroes of Operation Sindoor. Heartfelt gratitude to our armed forces for their courage, bravery, and unwavering commitment to the security of our nation. Thank you to the Honourable Prime Minister for his leadership and determination. Jai Hind.”
However, the post was met with skepticism. Many questioned why the production house waited so long to speak out, suggesting that the message was timed to counter negative publicity rather than driven by genuine patriotism.
Aamir Khan Responds to Tensions
At a recent event, Aamir Khan addressed the India-Pakistan tension, saying:
“We need justice and assurance that it [terrorist attacks] won’t happen again. We believe in our government; they’ll take action against the anti-social elements who committed this and bring them to justice.”
Despite the statement, many on social media remained unconvinced, with calls for a boycott of Sitaare Zameen Par continuing to gain momentum online.
As the release date approaches, it remains to be seen whether these gestures will help repair Khan’s public image or whether the backlash will affect the film’s box office performance.
