Manisha Koirala Reflects on Past Regret of Rejecting Yash Chopra Film Starring Madhuri Dixit

Renowned actress Manisha Koirala recently shared her sentiments regarding a significant career decision she made in the past, revealing her regret over declining a film offered by legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra. In an interview with India Today, Manisha expressed her feelings about turning down a project that would have seen her sharing the screen with fellow actress Madhuri Dixit.

The actress, who is currently preparing for her role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s period drama series “Heeramandi,” confessed that one of her biggest regrets was rejecting the opportunity to work with Yash Chopra. She explained, “One of the regrets that I have in my career is that I didn’t do Yash Chopra’s film. I was pitted against Madhuri ji (Dixit), and I got scared. I backed out of that project.”

Despite the initial setback, Manisha later had the chance to collaborate with Madhuri Dixit in Raj Kumar Santoshi’s “Lajja.” Reflecting on the experience, she emphasized, “Madhuri ji is such a good person and actress. There was no need for me to be insecure. I think when you have a strong actor in front of you, you only perform better. They encourage you to perform better. That comes from age and experience. I loved working with Madhuri ji in that (movie). I loved working with Rekha ji as well.”

The film in question, Yash Chopra’s “Dil To Pagal Hai,” was initially offered to several Bollywood actors during the 90s before ultimately being portrayed by Karishma Kapoor. The iconic musical face-off between Karishma and Madhuri in the song “The Dance of Envy” became a fan favorite.

Manisha Koirala’s upcoming project, “Heeramandi,” sees her portraying the role of Mallikajaan, a courtesan based in the red-light district of Heera Mandi in Lahore during the 1940s. The series delves into the relationships between courtesans, Nawabs, and British officers in pre-partition India. Alongside Manisha, “Heeramandi” features a stellar cast including Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Sheikh, and Sharmin Segal.

The actress’s candid reflections offer insights into the challenges and growth experienced in the competitive world of Bollywood, highlighting the importance of embracing opportunities and learning from past decisions.
