Eminem’s Mother, Debbie Nelson, Passes Away at 69 After Battling Lung Cancer

Debbie Nelson, the mother of acclaimed rapper Eminem, passed away on December 2 at the age of 69 after complications from lung cancer. The news was confirmed by Eminem’s representative and reported by People.

Early Life and Relationship with Eminem

Debbie Nelson was born in 1955 and married Eminem’s father, Marshall Bruce Mathers Jr., at the age of 16. Two years later, in 1972, she gave birth to Marshall Mathers III, known worldwide as Eminem.

Nelson and Eminem’s relationship was notoriously turbulent, marked by public feuds during his rise to fame. The rapper addressed their struggles in his 2002 hit song, Cleanin’ Out My Closet, leading Nelson to file a $11 million defamation lawsuit against her son.

Despite their differences, Nelson expressed hope for reconciliation in a 2008 interview with The Village Voice, saying, “There’s hope for everybody. It’s a matter of swallowing your pride. It’s over, it’s done. You need to move on.”

Signs of Reconciliation

In 2013, Eminem released the song Headlights, which fans interpreted as an emotional apology to his mother. Lyrics like, “So Mom, please accept this as a tribute I wrote on this jet,” signaled a possible mending of their relationship.

Nelson continued to support her son from a distance. When Eminem was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, she congratulated him in a heartfelt video message. “Marshall, I want to say, I could not let this day go by without congratulating you on your induction into the Hall of Fame,” she said.

Survived by Family

Debbie Nelson is survived by her sons, Eminem and Nathan Mathers. Her passing marks the end of a complicated yet significant chapter in Eminem’s life, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and hope for forgiveness.
