The much-anticipated trailer for Pa Ranjith’s upcoming film Thangalaan, starring Vikram, has finally been released, promising a gripping tale set during the British Raj. The film, which will hit theaters on August 15 in both 2D and 3D formats, showcases Vikram in the lead role as a fierce tribal leader.
The 2-minute-9-second trailer, shared by Vikram on X (formerly Twitter), begins with Parvathy Thiruvothu’s character probing Vikram’s troubled mind, suggesting his poor mental health. The narrative quickly introduces a British character, Lord Clement, who arrives in the village seeking gold, enlisting the villagers’ help. The trailer hints at dire consequences with a man predicting that searching for gold is akin to seeking death. Malavika Mohanan portrays a sorceress named Aarathi, dedicated to protecting the land from exploitation. The trailer concludes with a powerful image of Vikram covered in gold dust, standing resolutely with his people.
Thangalaan delves into the historical narrative behind the Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) in Karnataka. The filmmakers aim to uncover the ‘real story’ of how the British exploited one of the world’s largest gold mines, extracting over 900 tonnes of gold and transporting it to England. The film promises to shed light on the lesser-known aspects of this exploitation and the resilient efforts of the KGF residents to protect their land.
Based on real-life incidents, Thangalaan explores the ingenious ways the people of KGF resisted British exploitation during the pre-Independence era of the 19th century. The film is expected to highlight their struggles, sacrifices, and strategies to safeguard the mines.
Initially slated for release in January and later April this year, Thangalaan will now premiere on August 15. The film features an ensemble cast, including Parvathy Thiruvothu, Malavika Mohanan, Pasupathi, Muthukumar, Hari Krishnan, Preethi, Arjun Prabhakaran, and Hollywood actor Daniel Goldragon. The music, composed by GV Prakash, adds to the film’s intense and evocative atmosphere.
Produced by Studio Green, Thangalaan will be available in multiple languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi. The film’s gory and bloody teaser, released last November, received positive responses, setting high expectations for the full feature.
