Subhash Ghai Announces Sequel to Iconic Film Aitraaz on Its 20th Anniversary

Celebrating 20 years since the release of Aitraaz, filmmaker Subhash Ghai has delighted fans by announcing a long-awaited sequel, Aitraaz 2. Ghai, who produced the original through his production company, Mukta Arts, revealed that work on the sequel has been ongoing for three years, backed by what he describes as a “finest script.”

Marking the special occasion, Ghai shared a still from Aitraaz on Instagram, featuring Priyanka Chopra, whose portrayal of an ambitious, powerful woman remains memorable. In his post, Ghai praised Chopra for her bold performance, recounting her initial hesitation but ultimate confidence in the role, which challenged conventional norms of the time. “Bold and beautiful Priyanka Chopra dared and did it,” Ghai wrote, underscoring the lasting impact of her performance.

Ghai shared his excitement for Aitraaz 2, encouraging fans to “wait and watch” as Mukta Arts brings the sequel to life. Although further casting details remain under wraps, Ghai’s message has spurred anticipation among moviegoers curious to see the new direction for this story.

Originally released on November 12, 2004, Aitraaz is a romantic thriller directed by Abbas-Mustan. The film, featuring Priyanka Chopra, Akshay Kumar, and Kareena Kapoor, follows a man accused of sexual harassment by his powerful female boss—a controversial storyline inspired loosely by the 1994 Hollywood film Disclosure. The film’s exploration of themes of power, harassment, and gender roles earned it praise and marked it as a commercial success.

Subhash Ghai, a prominent filmmaker with an impressive cinematic legacy, has contributed several influential works to Indian cinema, such as Karz, Ram Lakhan, and Pardes. In addition to Aitraaz, his company Mukta Arts has produced acclaimed films, including Iqbal, for which Ghai won the National Film Award in 2006 for Best Film on Other Social Issues. Most recently, Ghai ventured into directing 36 Farmhouse, released in 2022.

With Ghai’s recent announcement, fans of the original Aitraaz now await details on the upcoming Aitraaz 2, eager to see how the sequel will expand upon the themes that made the original film so impactful.
