Veteran Bollywood actress Raveena Tandon recently shared insights into the historical gender pay gap in the Indian film industry, highlighting the challenges faced by female actors compared to their male counterparts. Additionally, she offered a glimpse into her upcoming projects, including her latest film “Patna Shuklla” and future endeavors.
In a candid interview with Jist News, Raveena Tandon spoke about the significant pay gap between male and female actors during her early years in Bollywood. She revealed that female actors had to work on 15-20 films to earn what their male co-stars made in just one film. Tandon emphasized the disparity in earnings and the longer hours women had to work to achieve financial parity in the industry.
“In those days, the money was very, very less, especially the pay disparity between actors and actresses. The male stars got a lot; much, much more. What they would make in one film, I would make in, say, 15 films. For women actors… me, personally… actually, I can’t speak for everybody, I can’t generalize this. I had to do 15-20 films to make as much money as my male counterparts,” Raveena stated.
She also noted that male co-stars like Salman Khan and Aamir Khan often opted for more selective projects due to the pay gap, highlighting the impact of financial considerations on career choices.
Raveena Tandon acknowledged the positive changes in Bollywood, with the entry of corporates leading to a more professional approach to filmmaking and improved compensation for actors. She expressed optimism about the evolving landscape, welcoming the increased professionalism and opportunities for artists in the industry.
“For everybody overall as well, the money was much lesser than the situation today. There are a lot more corporates coming in. It’s become a much more professional way of doing things, which is great actually,” Raveena added.
Amidst discussing industry dynamics, Raveena Tandon shared details about her recent film “Patna Shuklla,” where she portrayed the role of Tanvi Shukla, a lawyer navigating through an education scam affecting numerous students in India. The film, produced by Arbaaz Khan and directed by Vivek Budakoti, delves into pertinent societal issues and showcases Tandon’s versatile acting skills.
Looking ahead, Raveena revealed her involvement in upcoming projects such as “Ghudchadi” and “Welcome Back,” indicating her continued presence and contributions to Bollywood’s vibrant cinematic landscape.
Raveena Tandon’s candid remarks shed light on the historical challenges faced by female actors in Bollywood, particularly regarding pay inequality. Her insights reflect broader conversations about gender parity and professional evolution within the film industry. As she continues to engage in meaningful projects, Raveena remains a prominent figure advocating for change and inclusivity in Bollywood.
