‘L2: Empuraan’ Crosses ₹102 Crore in 14 Days, Outshines Salman Khan’s ‘Sikandar’ at Box Office

Empuraan, starring Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, is rewriting box office records as it crossed the ₹100 crore milestone within just 14 days of its release. The highly-anticipated sequel to Lucifer (2019) has now officially become the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time, raking in a staggering ₹102.35 crore.

According to data from Sacnilk, L2: Empuraan earned ₹1.15 crore on its second Wednesday (day 14), with a 13.77% occupancy in Malayalam-speaking regions. The film’s earnings show a slight dip of 16.13% from the previous day, when it earned ₹1.30 crore. Still, the film’s consistent run has cemented its place among the top box office performers of 2025.

Interestingly, the film’s impressive performance has put Salman Khan’s Sikandar in the shade. While Sikandar was expected to be one of Bollywood’s biggest hits this year, the film has seen a sharp decline in collections. After earning ₹4.75 crore on its second Sunday (day 8), it dropped to ₹1.75 crore on day 9 and ₹1.50 crore on day 10, showing no signs of recovery.

L2: Empuraan tells the gripping story of Stephen Nedumpally, aka Khureshi Ab’raam (Mohanlal), as he returns to Kerala to confront political and personal turmoil. With his brother CM Jathin Ramdas (Tovino Thomas) entangled with an extremist figure named Baldev (Abhimanyu Singh), Stephen temporarily shifts his focus from dismantling international drug cartels to navigating family and political drama back home. Supporting characters like Zayed Masood (played by director Prithviraj Sukumaran himself) and Priyadarshini (Manju Warrier) also face personal stakes in this high-voltage thriller.

The film hasn’t been without its share of controversies. Scenes referencing the 2002 Gujarat riots sparked backlash, prompting the filmmakers to revise and trim certain portions. Additionally, the production team has faced Enforcement Directorate (ED) raids and received Income Tax notices in separate cases.

Nevertheless, L2: Empuraan has emerged stronger, defying all odds to dominate the box office and emerge as a cultural phenomenon. With its gripping narrative, powerful performances, and political undercurrents, the film is expected to continue its strong run into its third weekend, firmly establishing itself as a landmark in Indian cinema.
