Filmmaker Kiran Rao, known for her work in Bollywood and her marriage to superstar Aamir Khan, recently shed light on the beginnings of her relationship with the actor. In a candid interview with Zoom, Rao revealed that she and Aamir began dating after his divorce from his first wife, Reena Dutta.
Contrary to popular belief, Rao clarified that their connection did not originate during the filming of “Lagaan,” where she served as an assistant director while Aamir Khan starred in the lead role. She disclosed, “Lots of people think that Aamir and I connected on Lagaan, we absolutely did not. He had his own life going on. In fact (he) went through his divorce after that.”
Rao further elaborated that their romance blossomed during the production of “Swades,” when Aamir was preparing for his role in “Mangal Pandey,” and they found themselves reconnected on set. Despite having worked together previously on commercials for Coke Punjabi, it wasn’t until this period that their relationship took a romantic turn.
Addressing misconceptions about their relationship causing Aamir’s divorce, Rao emphasized that their connection post-dated the dissolution of his marriage with Dutta. She recounted their interactions during “Lagaan” and clarified that any rumors suggesting their involvement during that time were unfounded.
Their courtship culminated in marriage in 2005, and the couple welcomed their son, Azad, in 2011. Despite their recent separation in 2021, Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan have continued to maintain an amicable relationship, often seen together at various events and collaborations.
Most notably, Rao was a prominent figure at Aamir’s daughter Ira Khan’s wedding earlier this year, underscoring their continued friendship and mutual support. Professionally, Rao recently made her directorial comeback with “Laapataa Ladies,” a project co-produced by Aamir Khan, marking their continued collaboration beyond their personal relationship.
