A celebratory moment captured during Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor’s Christmas gathering has sparked controversy, leading to a complaint filed in Mumbai, citing an alleged offense to religious sentiments. The complaint, filed by Sanjay Tiwari through his lawyers Ashish Rai and Pankaj Mishra at Ghatkopar police station, accuses Ranbir Kapoor and his family of causing offense during their Christmas celebration.
The contentious video, which went viral, depicts Ranbir Kapoor engaging in the Christmas flambé tradition, where a spirit is poured on a cake and briefly set on fire. Alongside him is his wife, actor Alia Bhatt, partaking in the festivities.
Tiwari’s complaint specifically highlights Kapoor’s alleged action of pouring liquor on the cake and setting it on fire while uttering the phrase “Jai Mata Di,” a sentiment that, according to the complaint, hurt religious sensitivities. The complaint underscores a perceived insensitivity by invoking the Hindu fire god before other deities, using intoxicants during a celebration from a different religious context.
Despite the filing of the complaint, no First Information Report (FIR) has been registered in connection with the incident as of yet.
The video in question was from the annual Christmas brunch hosted by Kunal Kapoor, attended by Ranbir, Alia, and their daughter Raha. Additionally, the couple participated in an intimate Christmas gathering at Alia Bhatt’s mother, Soni Razdan’s residence. Alia, sharing photos from the event, conveyed her gratitude in a social media post, expressing well wishes for Christmas.
Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor, who tied the knot in April 2022, welcomed their daughter Raha in November of the same year, marking their joyous expansion as a family.
The controversy surrounding this incident has triggered discussions regarding religious sensitivity and cultural appropriateness in celebratory contexts. As the complaint stirs debates, it awaits the legal course of action, while the incident has drawn attention to the nuances and boundaries when embracing diverse cultural traditions.
