Charu Shankar, A Year Apart from Ranbir Kapoor, Delves into 'Animal' as the Voice of Reason

In the latest blockbuster sensation, “Animal,” the casting of Charu Shankar as Ranbir Kapoor’s mother has raised eyebrows and sparked conversations within the industry. While the film has been celebrated for its stellar performances, Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s initial reluctance based on age has stirred intrigue.

Charu Shankar, just a year older than Ranbir Kapoor, revealed in an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama the intriguing story behind her pivotal role in the gripping drama. Despite initial reservations from director Sandeep Reddy Vanga due to her perceived youthfulness, Shankar’s talent and commitment ultimately secured her the crucial part.

“We are only one year apart; that is true. As an actor, why would I refuse?” Charu shared. “This was an opportunity, which was very exciting… to establish very quickly in the film what the central conflict of the film is. I was sold on that. I was like, yeah.”

The journey to landing the role was an unexpected encounter during which Sandeep Reddy Vanga, upon meeting her, initially remarked, “Nice to meet you, thank you for coming all the way, but I have to tell you, you’re too young.” However, after the narration of the story, Charu Shankar left an indelible mark, ultimately securing the part after six months.

Her character in “Animal” holds a pivotal position, serving as the ‘voice of reason.’ Charu admitted to feeling a mix of nervousness and excitement while working alongside industry stalwarts Anil Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor. The camaraderie on set was significant, especially with Anil Kapoor, who reminisced about a past project they were slated to do together, a memory that resonated on the first day of shooting.

Sharing her experience, Charu Shankar highlighted her bond with co-star Rashmika Mandanna, who portrays Geetanjali, Ranbir Kapoor’s wife, as one of the closest connections forged during the filming process.

“Animal” has taken the box office by storm, ranking among the highest-grossing Indian films of the year. Despite receiving criticism for its alleged misogynistic and excessively violent content, director Sandeep Reddy Vanga has staunchly defended the film, expressing disagreement with the critique.

The ensemble cast featuring Bobby Deol, Triptii Dimri, Suresh Oberoi, and Prem Chopra alongside the leading actors has contributed to the film’s immense success. Produced by Bhushan Kumar and Krishan Kumar’s T-Series, Murad Khetani’s Cine1 Studios, and Pranay Reddy Vanga’s Bhadrakali Pictures, “Animal” made its theatrical debut on December 1, captivating audiences with its intense narrative and powerhouse performances.
