Canada-based Punjabi singer Shubhneet Singh, widely recognized as Shubh, has found himself embroiled in a controversy that has led to the cancellation of his much-anticipated India tour. The cancellation comes in the wake of allegations that Shubh expressed support for Khalistan. The focal point of the controversy is a social media post featuring a distorted map of India.
In a heartfelt Instagram post on Thursday, Shubh conveyed his profound disappointment at the abrupt cancellation of his tour, expressing his eagerness to perform in his home country. The tour cancellation was initiated by BookMyShow, a popular ticket-booking platform, after facing a boycott call on social media platforms.
The boycott campaign against Shubh gained momentum following his sharing of a distorted map of India on his Instagram story back in January. The contentious map omitted the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and the Northeastern states. Alongside the image, Shubh had written the words “Pray for Punjab,” which triggered a significant backlash on social media.
However, the singer later deleted the map and replaced it with a message reading “Pray for Punjab” without any accompanying image. In his defense, Shubh explained that his sole intention in sharing the initial post was to express concern for Punjab amid reports of electricity and internet shutdowns in the state.
“My intent in resharing that post on my story was only to pray for Punjab as there were reports of electricity and internet shutdowns throughout the state. There was no other thought behind it, and I definitely didn’t intend to hurt anyone’s sentiments,” Shubh clarified in his Instagram post.
Despite his clarification, the controversy surrounding the singer’s tour escalated as several high-profile individuals, including Indian cricketers Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Hardik Pandya, unfollowed him on Instagram. Notably, this controversy unfolds against the backdrop of strained relations between India and Canada.
Earlier this week, Canada accused India of involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June and expelled New Delhi’s intelligence chief in Ottawa as a retaliatory measure. This diplomatic move has plunged relations between the two nations, already tenuous, into a dramatic new low.
In response, India swiftly rejected the allegations made by Justin Trudeau’s government, labeling them as “absurd” and “motivated.” As a countermeasure, India expelled a senior Canadian diplomat, giving him five days to leave the country.
The cancellation of Shubh’s India tour serves as a poignant example of the intersection between political sensitivities, social media, and the entertainment industry, casting a shadow on the vibrant landscape of Indian music and culture.
