Akshay Kumar Renames Film 'Mission Raniganj' to 'The Great Bharat Rescue,' Sparking National Identity Debate

Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar has set off a flurry of discussions and debates on social media with his recent decision to change the title of his forthcoming film from ‘Mission Raniganj’ to ‘The Great Bharat Rescue.’ The alteration, which replaces ‘India’ with ‘Bharat’ in the film’s title, has ignited a fresh conversation about the ongoing debate regarding renaming the country.

The actor unveiled the motion poster for his upcoming film ‘The Great Bharat Rescue’ on his Instagram page. While the film was originally tentatively titled ‘The Great Indian Rescue,’ the alteration of the title has stirred significant attention online.

One keen-eyed Instagram user pointed out another change in Akshay Kumar’s post. Initially, the caption read, “Watch the story of India’s true hero…” but was later edited to “Bharat’s true hero.” This minor alteration in the caption has further fueled the discussion about the shift from ‘India’ to ‘Bharat’ as the country’s official name.

Social media users quickly took notice of these changes, with some expressing their thoughts on the matter. One user humorously commented, “Great Indian rescue ko toh Great Bharat Rescue kar diya par caption mein phir bhi India’s likh diya (He changed Great Indian Rescue to Great Bharat Rescue but the caption still says ‘India’s’).” The user then added, “haha kiya change abhi (haha, he changed it just now).”

Another user wrote, “Yaha bhi Bharat (Bharat here as well) (thinking emoji),” highlighting the alteration of the name. This move by Akshay Kumar has come at a time when discussions about officially renaming India to Bharat have been ongoing in the country.

The ‘Bharat vs. India’ debate gained significant attention recently when invitations by President Draupadi Murmu to heads of state and chief ministers for an official banquet during the G20 Summit in New Delhi used the term ‘Bharat’ instead of ‘India,’ sparking a heated controversy.

‘Mission Raniganj,’ now ‘The Great Bharat Rescue,’ is a rescue drama directed by Tinu Suresh Desai, known for his work on ‘Rustom’ (2016), which earned Akshay Kumar his maiden National Film Award for Best Actor. The film also stars Parineeti Chopra and is scheduled to hit cinemas on October 6, 2023.

Interestingly, Akshay Kumar had announced on Independence Day that he had acquired Indian citizenship, having previously held Canadian citizenship. This move by the actor, combined with his film’s title change, has added fuel to the ongoing discussion about the country’s identity and the debate between ‘India’ and ‘Bharat.’
