Kannada Actor Upendra Apologizes After FIR Lodged Against Him for Social Media Remarks

In a recent turn of events, Kannada actor and Uttama Prajaakeeya Party leader, Upendra, has issued an apology after facing legal action under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The actor allegedly used offensive language targeting a particular community during a Facebook Live session, leading to a public outcry and legal repercussions.

According to the police, Upendra had used derogatory words on the Social media platform Facebook Live, which were deemed offensive and hurtful to a specific community. The incident sparked outrage among various groups and individuals, leading to a formal complaint and the initiation of legal proceedings against the actor.

In response to the growing backlash, Upendra took to Facebook to issue an apology and express his regret for his comments. He acknowledged that his words had hurt the sentiments of many people and committed to deleting the offensive live video from his social media accounts. He also provided insight into his upbringing and the context within which he had grown up, mentioning that his childhood experiences from 50 years ago shaped his perceptions.

The situation escalated further as the Bengaluru University Postgraduate and Research Students Union organized a protest on campus to condemn Upendra’s statements. During the protest, Gopal Giriappa, a Dalit leader from Samata Sainik Dal, highlighted the community’s hurt feelings and expressed that a formal complaint had been filed against Upendra through their organization.

The protest also witnessed demands for a government ban on all films featuring Upendra, as a form of protest against his derogatory comments towards the Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) communities.

In response to the complaint, Madhusudan, an assistant director of the social welfare department, filed a formal complaint at the CK Achukattu police station, accusing the actor of defaming a community. This led to the police registering a First Information Report (FIR) and initiating investigations into the matter. Another FIR was also lodged against Upendra at Halasur Gate Police Station, following a complaint by the chief of a pro-Kannada organization.

The incident highlights the power of social media and the importance of responsible online behavior, especially for individuals with public influence. Upendra’s apology and the ongoing legal proceedings underline the need for understanding and respect among various communities in society, urging a collective effort towards fostering harmony and inclusivity.
