Truecaller brings back call recording with transcribe feature, but there is a catch - India Today

Truecaller, the popular caller identification app, has reintroduced its call recording feature after it was removed last year due to restrictions imposed by Google and Apple on their operating systems. The company has found a way to bring back this highly requested feature, but it comes with a twist. The call recording feature is now available for users but is no longer free of charge. Currently launched in the US, Truecaller plans to expand its availability to other countries, including India.

According to Truecaller, the new call recording feature is powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and is a significant differentiator for the app. This AI-powered functionality sets Truecaller apart from other similar services in the market. In addition to call recording, Truecaller also offers a unique feature that translates calls into text messages, providing users with transcriptions of their conversations. This is particularly useful during important meetings or discussions where having a written record is valuable. Currently, the transcribe feature supports the English language, and its availability will be extended soon.

The recorded calls are of high clarity and can be conveniently transcribed into text, making it easy to navigate through conversations. Truecaller utilizes Large Language Model (LLM) technology to generate accurate and searchable transcriptions. Each transcription is accompanied by a brief subject line, facilitating quick and efficient search functionality within the transcriptions. Furthermore, Truecaller allows users to manage their recorded calls by providing options to listen to the recordings, rename them for better organization, delete unwanted ones, or share them with other apps such as Airdrop, Messages, or Mail.

To overcome the restrictions imposed by Google and Apple, Truecaller is using a recording line service provided by a cloud telephony provider. This means that calls are recorded on the cloud and then sent to users once the call ends. The recorded calls are stored directly on the user’s device, ensuring complete control over privacy. Additionally, users have the option to create backups of their recordings on iCloud or Google Drive, further enhancing data security.

At present, the new call recording feature is exclusively available for premium users of the Truecaller app based in the United States. However, Truecaller has plans to expand its availability to more countries, including India, in the near future. By reintroducing this highly sought-after feature, Truecaller aims to cater to the needs of its users who rely on call recording for various purposes such as professional documentation, personal records, or legal requirements.

As Truecaller continues to enhance its offerings and adapt to changing user demands, the reintroduction of the call recording feature, along with the innovative transcribe capability, demonstrates the app’s commitment to providing a comprehensive and user-friendly communication experience. With the promise of expanded availability and the integration of AI technology, Truecaller aims to solidify its position as a leading communication app trusted by millions worldwide.
