Hansal Mehta Defends Khushi Kapoor and Ibrahim Ali Khan Amid Nadaaniyan Backlash

Filmmaker Hansal Mehta has spoken out in defense of newcomers Khushi Kapoor and Ibrahim Ali Khan, who have faced heavy criticism following the release of their debut film, Nadaaniyan. The film, which was panned by both critics and audiences, has reportedly left the young actors shaken.

In an interview with ETimes, Mehta expressed concern over the harsh remarks directed at the debutants, stating that the backlash must have been “traumatizing” for them. He condemned the nature of the criticism, calling it “in terrible taste.”

“Coming from a Film Family Doesn’t Ensure Acting Skills”

Mehta pointed out that being from a film family does not guarantee acting prowess. He reminded critics that even established actors had awkward debuts but did not face the level of scrutiny that social media now enables.

“I do feel that people are being very harsh and unfair. Have we checked for the preparedness of these children before they got their break? Their parents also had awkward debuts. It’s just that they weren’t in the public eye as much as today’s actors due to social media,” he said.

“Big Launches Over Preparedness”

The Shahid director also criticized the tendency of industry insiders to prioritize a “grand launch” over genuine preparation. He recalled approaching a young actor for an unconventional role, but their advisors insisted on a more commercial debut.

“They want to be launched by a big banner, regardless of whether the project has a strong concept. They want the same high-profile entry that Kumar Gaurav, Sunny Deol, Hrithik Roshan, or Tiger Shroff received. I feel sad when I see them being ridiculed,” he remarked.

Mehta urged young actors to focus on their craft rather than public perception. “Their first goal should be to gain respect through their work. Once they deliver a strong performance, box office numbers won’t matter,” he added.

Hansal Mehta’s Perspective on Bollywood’s Future

Recently, Hansal Mehta praised emerging actors like Adarsh Gourav and Vedang Raina in a social media post, suggesting that while the Hindi film industry is not dying, it does need a reset. His comments reflect his belief in the potential of new talent, as long as they are given the right opportunities and guidance.

Despite the harsh reception to Nadaaniyan, Mehta’s words offer a sense of encouragement to the young actors, urging them to rise above the negativity and prove their worth through their performances.
