Anurag Kashyap Confirms Exit from "Toxic" Bollywood, Plans to Work in South Films

Renowned filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has officially confirmed his departure from Bollywood, citing the industry’s increasing obsession with box office numbers and the lack of creative freedom. In a recent interaction with The Hindu, Kashyap expressed his frustration, stating, “The industry has become too toxic. Everyone is chasing unrealistic targets, trying to make the next Rs 500 or Rs 800 crore film. The creative atmosphere is gone.”

The director, known for his bold storytelling, had previously voiced similar concerns in a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India. He revealed that the relentless focus on profitability has stripped away the joy of filmmaking, making it difficult for him to experiment with his craft. “Before the film even starts, it becomes about ‘how do we sell it?’ So the joy of filmmaking is sucked out. That’s why I want to move out,” he had stated.

According to a source cited by The Hindu, Anurag Kashyap has likely relocated to Bengaluru and is keen on working in South Indian films, where he finds more creative fulfillment. He also admitted to envying South filmmakers for their ability to take risks without being burdened by commercial pressures.

Despite his decision to distance himself from Bollywood, Kashyap remains active in the film industry. He will be seen playing a cop in Dacoit, a bilingual film in Hindi and Telugu starring Adivi Sesh and Mrunal Thakur. The release date for the film is yet to be announced. Additionally, he is currently promoting Footage, a Malayalam thriller directed by Saiju Sreedharan, featuring Manju Warrier, Vishak Nair, and Gayathri Ashok. While the film was released in August last year, its Hindi version is set to premiere on March 7, 2025, with Kashyap serving as a presenter.
