Rakesh Roshan Worked Out with Hrithik Before Cancer Surgery: 'Then I Went to the Hospital'

Veteran filmmaker Rakesh Roshan recently opened up about his battle with cancer and the time he was shot in 2000, revealing his strong mental resilience during both life-threatening incidents. In an interview with News18, Roshan shared that he worked out at the gym with his son, Hrithik Roshan, on the very morning of his cancer surgery in 2018.

Rakesh Roshan on Staying Strong During Cancer Diagnosis

Recalling his cancer journey, Rakesh Roshan said, “I took it very lightly, even when I got shot. I used to joke with my family so they wouldn’t feel that life was heading into a dark space. I did the same when I was diagnosed with cancer. On the morning of my surgery, Hrithik and I worked out at the gym for an hour. Then I got ready and went to the hospital. My surgery took place at one o’clock, and by five, I was already walking. It’s all in the mind. It depends on how strong you can be to forget hardships.”

Roshan was diagnosed with throat cancer in December 2018. In a previous interview with SpotBoye, he had revealed, “I had a gut feeling that I had cancer. When I got a call confirming my biopsy results, I was at Hrithik’s place. It was December 15, 2018—I remember it clearly. I got scared when they told me that my tongue might have to be cut for grafting. I didn’t want to go through all that. The tongue is the worst place to have cancer.”

Hrithik Roshan on His Father’s Shooting Incident

Rakesh Roshan was shot in 2000, just a week after the release of Hrithik’s blockbuster debut Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai, which he had directed. Two men linked to the Mumbai underworld attacked him outside his office, leaving him critically injured.

In The Roshans, a Netflix India docuseries, Hrithik recalled, “I still can’t remember feeling afraid for my dad because he was superman. Even when he was in the hospital, I saw blood-red white sheets, and for a moment, I was scared. But in the next moment, my dad was laughing and talking as if he could handle everything.”

A Testament to Mental Strength

Despite facing life-threatening situations, Rakesh Roshan’s positive mindset and resilience have inspired many. Whether it was his battle with cancer or surviving a near-fatal shooting, the filmmaker continues to emphasize the power of mental strength in overcoming hardships.
