Noted Malayalam Writer MT Vasudevan Nair Passes Away at 91

Thiruvananthapuram: Celebrated Malayalam writer and Jnanpith Award recipient MT Vasudevan Nair passed away at the age of 91, hospital sources confirmed on Wednesday. Popularly known as M T, the acclaimed author, screenwriter, and filmmaker had been undergoing treatment at a private hospital following heart failure. Despite the efforts of a multidisciplinary team of cardiologists and critical care experts, he succumbed to his condition.

In a career spanning over seven decades, M T Vasudevan Nair emerged as one of the most influential figures in Malayalam literature. He authored nine novels, 19 short story collections, and over 54 screenplays. His literary legacy also includes essays, memoirs, and six directorial ventures in cinema.

His seminal work, Naalukettu (The Ancestral House), is considered a cornerstone of Malayalam literature, while other notable novels like Asuravithu, Manju, and Kaalam further cemented his status as a literary icon.

A Towering Legacy of Accolades

MT Vasudevan Nair’s contributions earned him numerous prestigious awards. In 1995, he was conferred the Jnanpith Award, India’s highest literary honor. Other accolades include:

  • Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award
  • Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award
  • Vayalar Award
  • Vallathol Award
  • Ezhuthachan Award
  • Mathrubhumi Literary Award
  • O N V Literary Award

In 2005, M T was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honor. His influence extended to Malayalam cinema, earning him the J C Daniel Award for lifetime achievement in 2013. Recently, in 2022, he was bestowed with the inaugural Kerala Jyothi Award, the highest civilian honor from the Kerala government.

A Voice of Kerala’s Cultural Essence

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed profound grief, describing M T as a cultural beacon who showcased Kerala’s ethos to the world.

“The brilliance that brought Malayalam literature to the forefront of global recognition is what we have lost with the passing of M T Vasudevan Nair. His works captured the beauty and complexity of Kerala’s life, deeply rooted in the cultural traditions of Valluvanadu,” said Vijayan.

The state government has announced official mourning on December 26 and 27 as a tribute to the literary titan. All government events, including the Cabinet meeting, have been postponed.

A Life Immersed in Literature and Cinema

In addition to his literary achievements, M T served as the editor of Mathrubhumi Weekly, influencing generations of readers. His screenplays left an indelible mark on Malayalam cinema, earning him widespread acclaim.

MT Vasudevan Nair’s contributions transcended literature and cinema, making him a symbol of Kerala’s rich cultural heritage. His demise is a monumental loss, leaving an irreplaceable void in Malayalam literature and beyond.
