A recent viral video capturing an unusual interaction between an Indian fan and global pop star Selena Gomez has taken social media by storm, triggering mixed reactions from viewers worldwide. In the clip, the fan is seen eagerly taking a selfie with Gomez and then making an unexpected request: for her to chant “Jai Shri Ram,” a slogan commonly associated with Hindu devotion.

Initially appearing puzzled, the 32-year-old Gomez listens as the fan attempts to clarify by calling it “India’s best slogan.” Politely, yet dismissively, Gomez responds with a warm smile and a simple, “Aww, thank you, honey,” before moving on.

The video, first shared by Instagram user Pallav Paliwal, quickly gained traction on social media platforms. Paliwal captioned the video with, “One of our followers met Selena Gomez, and she said ‘Jai Shri Ram’ on the occasion of Diwali.” However, viewers pointed out that the video appears to have been taken during the Cannes Film Festival in May 2024, as Gomez was seen wearing the same attire during her Cannes appearance.

The video has ignited significant debate across social media, with some users expressing discomfort and embarrassment over the fan’s request. Many viewers on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram voiced their frustrations. “I got levels of embarrassment I couldn’t believe were possible,” one X user commented. Another remarked, “Most pathetic thing I’ve seen all year.” A third viewer expressed discomfort, saying, “Even though I am not associated with these people, I got secondhand embarrassment from just watching this. What kind of incurable inferiority complex is this?!”

Mr. Paliwal’s Instagram post has amassed nearly 20,000 likes and has continued to gather views across X and Facebook, with millions of views in total. While some have viewed the incident as humorous or inconsequential, others have critiqued the fan’s request as inappropriate and an attempt to impose cultural symbols in uncomfortable settings.

As social media users continue to discuss the interaction, the video reflects the broader conversation around cultural representation, the limits of fan interactions with celebrities, and the potential for misunderstandings in such exchanges.
