vMithun Chakraborty Reflects on Early Prejudice in Bollywood: "Dark-Skinned Actors Wouldn't Survive"

Veteran actor and politician Mithun Chakraborty recently addressed the discrimination he faced regarding his skin color during his formative years in the film industry. The occasion was the 70th National Film Awards ceremony held at Vigyan Bhawan, where he was honored with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award by President Droupadi Murmu. This award is the highest recognition in Indian cinema, celebrating lifetime achievements in the industry.

A Candid Acceptance Speech

During his acceptance speech, Mithun shared personal anecdotes highlighting the challenges he faced. “Many told me that dark-skinned actors wouldn’t survive in Bollywood,” he revealed. He recounted how he prayed to God, asking, “Could you change my color?” However, he eventually accepted that he could not alter his complexion. Instead, he decided to hone his dancing skills, determined to become so exceptional that audiences would overlook his skin color. “That’s how I transformed into the ‘sexy, dusky Bengali babu,'” he added, showcasing his resilience and commitment to his craft.

Mithun also reflected on his journey through the highs and lows of the film industry, particularly after winning his first National Film Award. “I thought I had become Al Pacino,” he admitted, recalling how he treated producers dismissively. The reality check came when a producer kicked him out of his office, leading him to understand that he was not as invincible as he had believed. “That day marked the end of my delusions,” he stated.

Hard Work Over Handouts

Emphasizing the struggles he faced, Mithun noted, “I received nothing on a platter. Everything I earned was through hard work.” He candidly admitted to questioning God about his struggles in the past, but after receiving the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, he felt a sense of peace, stating, “I will never complain again.”

A Legacy of Iconic Performances

Known affectionately as Mithun Da by his fans, Mithun made his film debut in 1976 with Mrigayaa, where he captivated audiences with his versatile acting. His portrayal of a Santhal rebel earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor in his debut, and he later won two additional National Film Awards for Tahader Katha (1992) and Swami Vivekananda (1998).

Mithun is also credited with several iconic dance numbers, including “I Am a Disco Dancer,” “Jimmy Jimmy,” and “Super Dancer,” which have become timeless classics cherished by generations of fans. Most recently, he appeared in Vivek Agnihotri’s film The Kashmir Files, further solidifying his place in the industry.

Conclusion

Mithun Chakraborty’s reflections on his journey serve as an inspiring reminder of perseverance in the face of adversity. His commitment to excellence and dedication to his craft have not only shaped his illustrious career but also paved the way for future generations in Bollywood.
