Actress Amala Paul has addressed the backlash she received for her outfit choice during a recent promotional event for her upcoming Malayalam film, Level Cross. The event took place at St. Albert’s College in Ernakulam, Kochi, where Paul, along with co-star Asif Ali, was promoting their new film. The actor faced criticism on social media for wearing a short dress with a plunging neckline, which many deemed ‘inappropriate’ for a college event.
Addressing the Backlash
During a press meet following the event, Paul responded to the criticism, defending her choice of attire. She emphasized that she wore the dress based on her comfort and did not perceive it as inappropriate for the function. Paul suggested that the problem lay with how the cameras captured and projected her outfit rather than the outfit itself.
“The problem lies with how the cameras projected my dressing style,” Paul stated. “I wore what was comfortable for me. My dress was not inappropriate for the function. What was probably inappropriate was the way the cameras projected my attire. I have no control over that.”
Paul also clarified that the students at the college were comfortable with her outfit, countering the negative comments online. “The students were totally comfortable with what I wore. I wear all types of clothing, be it traditional or western. By wearing that dress, I wanted to instill confidence among students regarding their dressing choices,” she added.
Social Media Backlash
The controversy began when images and videos of Paul in the dress surfaced online, leading to a flurry of misogynistic comments. Some social media users expressed their disapproval with remarks such as, “Be it a part of promotion or any function, there should be some minimum sense of the dress you wear in an educational institution,” and “Dress decently for an educational institution.” Others criticized her fashion sense, suggesting a lack of common sense.
Upcoming Film and Personal Life
Amala Paul, who recently welcomed a baby boy, is currently focused on promoting Level Cross, set to release in theaters this Friday. Despite the online criticism, Paul remains steadfast in her approach to personal expression and comfort, aiming to support and encourage confidence in personal style among her audience.
